A dog pushes a food bowl the way a snowplough pushes snow, and the mat under it is the only thing that decides whether dinner ends in the middle of the kitchen. A waterproof silicone mat with a raised lip holds the bowl and the spill; a fabric one holds the spill and lets the bowl go. Which you want depends entirely on the animal.

Litter mats work on a different principle: an open mesh that lets granules fall through and stay there until the mat is lifted and shaken out. That means the useful measurement is not the size of the mat but the width of the path the cat takes leaving the box. Two feet of mesh in the wrong direction catches nothing.
