A doormat has two different jobs and most houses need both. Outside the door, an open structure scrapes grit off a sole and lets it fall through, so an outdoor mat should never sit flat against a surface that traps what it removes. Inside the door, an absorbent mat takes the water that is left, and it needs enough length that a person takes two steps on it rather than one.
