A felt and rubber pad is two products laminated together. The rubber face does the holding against the floor; the felt above it adds height and absorbs the shock a thin rug passes straight through to a hard floor. Under a flatweave or a kilim the difference is obvious the first time you cross it, and it is the reason this pad costs more per square foot than the plain grip pad on the neighbouring shelf.
Felt also changes how a rug ages. A rug crushed directly onto boards wears along the walking line first; the same rug with felt under it spreads that load, and the pile recovers between footfalls. The sizes here go 2 by 3, 2 by 8, 4 by 6, 5 by 7, 6 by 9 and 8 by 10 feet, with a 15 by 54 inch runner width, and all of them trim with a sharp knife rather than scissors.
